Performance Appraisal and Importance in Organizations

Performance appraisal is one of the common and important aspects of human resource management and it is the integral part of any organizations that are keen to have high success and consider sky as their limit. Performance appraisal endows the managers and other employees to know about the areas in which staff can excel and also about the field where they need improvements. It is as important as financial and other resources of the firm because organization performance is largely dependent on employee’s performances and has both positive and negative impact and can also effect the utilization of other resources.

First step in conducting performance appraisal is to identify the organizational goals clearly and also to make it clear to the staff along with individual goals, time span for the achievement of these goals and other methods and techniques through which their performance will be evaluated and estimated. Performance appraisal should be the tradition of every organization because it is beneficial for both organization and individual because it enfolds many promotional breaks.

Some of the benefits of performance appraisal are as follows.

Employee accountability: it makes the employees responsible because they know they will be evaluated on regular basis and they will be accountable for their performance. He/she also know that any mistake may also affect other employee’s performance as well.

Career path: performance appraisal allows managers and employees to discuss the goals and mission that have to be gain at every cost. This will help in identifying the areas where employee needs to acquire necessary training, education and skills. It also highlights the area which needs improvement or certain course completion.
Communicate company’s goals: apart from individual goals it also helps manger to explain and describe company goals and the techniques by which employee can help in achieving these goals. Managers also made them clear how a small irresponsible act can split disaster within company.

Feed back: employees always demand some words of admiration and motivation which encourages their moves toward success. They are always in need to know either they are performing well or is there any issue regarding their performance. It is so because everyone desires to move ahead quickly and get promotion to higher ranks.
Personal attention: during the process of performance appraisal there is a session in which supervisor and employee discuss about strength and weaknesses. This helps employees to improve themselves and also provide them opportunity to have face to face discussion with their boss and he/she also has the chance to speak about personal concerns and anything that hinder their performance.

Lots of performance appraisal techniques are used by managers in different organizations but one must be sure to use that method which is accepted by both managers and employees in order to reduce any chances of controversies.
